-the HORN-
Unlike later 1-A horns, this unit was completely supported by the
stiffness of its form, and did not have metal reinforcing strips
on either the Left or Right sides. As you see, the fabric core horn has collapsed.

First step is to reinforce the exposed fabric with shellac to stabilize
it. I've clamped the horn into a straight position to
apply the shellac.
The great thing about using shellac is that it can be softened and
adjusted as it cures (which will take DAYS). To further
strengthen it, I will be applying
an epoxy resin to the weakened areas. And finally, the entire horn will be re-grain painted, as original .

Horn elbow stripped, notice how nicely the original gold wash is preserved:

After the shellac I applied to the damaged fiber dried, I applied
industrial strength epoxy to both the inside and outside horn surfaces.
This was the final step in restoring the SHAPE to the horn. Next
I will do some sanding to the epoxy, and have mahogany grain painting
applied.

Horn and elbow primed, and ready for grain paint.
